Course Description

Learning about the natural world is one of the greatest responsibilities of humanity. This course picks up where your biology course left off by getting into a more detailed discussion about the concept of ecosystems, landscapes, biodiversity, evolutionary ecology, humans and the environment, and field ecology. Your journey toward a more complete understanding of the environment is crafted around nine course projects that incorporate your comprehension of in-class materials, independent research, and field data collection and analysis. In brief, you will learn ecology by being a field ecologist for a short time. Hopefully this experience will instill a deeper understanding of the natural world around you, and foster a desire to further your ecological studies beyone this course.

Universal Statement about the Nature of Science and Technology

The nature of science and technology is characterized by a commitment to questioning the very structure and function of the world around us. Answering these questions involves developing an appropriate base of science process and content knowledge, and developing the skills used in experimental design and analysis. These skills: observation, classification, inference, prediction, measurement, computation, estimation, and communication allow us to complete the scientific process that turns questions into answers. All disciplines of science and technology have developed their foundations and continue to make advances by using this process. When we are able to apply process and content knowledge, and science and technology skills to answer questions about the world, we become independent learners who are capable of affecting change in both ourselves and the world around us. Development of science and technology skills yields benefits that overflow the discipline of science and help us to solve real-life problems and understand real-world situations.

Lab fee: To help defray the cost of lab equipment, materials, and field trips, we must collect a laboratory fee for some of our science courses. The fee for Ecology is $15 and you can pay at the main office. Use the account # 1110 513 000 30 810 180 000 810. Please see the HS office staff if you are unable to pay the fee you may be eligible to have the lab fee waived.
